  • Forever Marilyn

    Forever Marilyn

Jan. 22, 2023: "Forever Marilyn," a 26-foot tall sculpture by Seward Johnson in Palm Springs, California. Johnson created the 24,000-pound piece in 2011. The statue is based on the famous scene of Marilyn Monroe in the 1955 Billy Wilder movie "Seven Year Itch." I used the iPhone app Bluristic to create this image.

  • Salvation Mountain

    Salvation Mountain

Jan. 21, 2023: Stop at Salvation Mountain outside of Niland, California. Resident Leonard Knight created the monument between 1989 and 2011. He then had to enter long-term senior care, passing away in 2014. A non-profit now controls the site that needs constant maintenance. A full-time caretaker lives at Salvation Moutain. A group of docents also help keep watch.

  • Cabazon Dinosaurs

    Cabazon Dinosaurs

Jan. 22, 2023: Stop at the Cabazon Dinosaurs on Interstate 10, west of Palm Springs, California. Artist Claude Bell built the original two dinosaurs, Dinny and Mr. Rex. After Bell passed away in 1988, the surviving family sold the site. Today, an indoor/outdoor walk-through park is located adjacent to Mr. Rex. A $15 admission allows access to over 75 fiberglass and robotic dinosaurs.

  • Cross and Wheel

    Cross and Wheel

Feb. 4, 2023: Wooden cross and wagon wheel displayed at The Owl Cafe in Red Mountain, California. Built in 1921 and rebuilt after a 1930 fire, the Owl Cafe is no longer a restaurant but a museum with side businesses. Visitors can tour the museum for three dollars, but the owners also sell coffee, mining supplies, and survival equipment—quite the mixed bag. Of course, I had fun taking photos.

  • Union Station

    Union Station

March 11, 2023: Union Station in downtown Los Angeles. Opened in May 1939, Union Station consolated the Los Angeles operations of the Union Pacific, Southern Pacific, and Santa Fe railroads into one terminal. The "Last of the Great Railroad Stations" building saw heavy use during World War II. But in the 1950s, air and auto travel competition significantly reduced the public's use of Union Station.
