    Shaniko

Late on Sunday, Aug. 21, 2022, a semi-truck buried itself into the 7 Directions Restaurant in Shaniko, Oregon. The truck destroyed the combination restaurant, ice cream parlor, and antique business. The restaurant is located on the edge of Shaniko, next to Highway 97, a road traveled by many semi-trucks. When I stopped on Sep. 26th, the damaged building, slated for demolition, sat with its new garage wide open. In 1910, Shaniko, Oregon, had a population of 500. Today about 40 people live in the community. The 7 Directions Restaurant may reopen in the Shaniko Hotel, the main building in the community. The Shaniko Hotel, formerly the Columbia Southern Hotel, opened in 1902. The building is currently undergoing renovations. This infrared image shows the tire marks of either the semi-truck or the tow truck used to remove the semi-truck. 261/365

Infrared image - Jan. 20, 2023: Cabot's Pueblo Museum in Desert Hot Springs, California. In 1913, Cabot Yerxa, age 30, homesteaded on 160 acres. He dug wells, and he found a hot spring and in another - nice cold water. Desert Hot Springs is named after Cabot's hot water well. In 1941, Cabot built his museum and home out of recycled railroad ties, telephone poles, and adobe bricks. The museum is on the National Register of Historic Places.

    Cabazon Dinosaurs

Jan. 22, 2023: Stop at the Cabazon Dinosaurs on Interstate 10, west of Palm Springs, California. Artist Claude Bell built the original two dinosaurs, Dinny and Mr. Rex. After Bell passed away in 1988, the surviving family sold the site. Today, an indoor/outdoor walk-through park is located adjacent to Mr. Rex. A $15 admission allows access to over 75 fiberglass and robotic dinosaurs.
